Couplings for steel industry

In a steel plant, there is a necessity for the reliability and high performance of machinery and equipment.  Couplings, serving as vital transmission parts, are no exception to meet higher and more stringent quality requirements needed for the steel plant’s equipment and machinery.

Function:
It used to transfer rotational movement from one shaft to another. Couplings are used to connect two shafts for torque transmission in varied applications. Couplings are capable of transmitting axial thrust loads between machines and any axial growth that may occur due to high temperature.

Types of coupling
Couplings are normally classified in two ways. The classification of couplings is rigid coupling and flexible coupling.

Rigid couplings are used for shafts having no misalignment. Rigid couplings are of following types:

  • Sleeve coupling
  • Sleeve coupling with taper pins
  • Clamp coupling
  • Ring compression type couplings
  • Flange coupling
Flexible couplings are more commonly used to transmit driving torque between a prime mover and a rotating element of the equipment. Flexible couplings are of following types:
  • Elastomeric couplings
  • Metallic membrane couplings
  • Miscellaneous couplings

Effective management of energy in steel plant

In recent years, the need for a more rational and efficient management of energy has emerged as a strategic and urgent issue for an integrated iron and steel plant. Today energy plays an important role in the operation of the steel plant and inefficient use of energy has severe adverse effect on the plant bottom line. In fact, energy costs make up a large percentage of total operating costs. This has made the management of the steel plant to focus its attention on the use of energy in the plant and the efficient management of energy usage has become one of the prime objectives for the management of every steel plant. Active and efficient management of the energy not only helps in the energy conservation and minimization of environmental impact but it is also crucial in ensuring the competitiveness of the steel plant.

Effective management of the energy results into the following.
1. It provides opportunities to decrease the energy intensity/ton of crude steel.
2. It provides best or good practices to utilize energy sources more effectively
3. It provides best or good practices to recover energy (heat, and gas etc.) wherever practical
4. It enables the steel plant to develop plans for plant energy intensity reduction.
5. It helps prioritization of the capital investments for improving the energy efficiency with the biggest impact.
6. It optimizes purchase and consumption of all fuel types and energy inputs.
7. It provides opportunities to reduce carbon di oxide (CO2) and other emissions.

Types of energy used in the steel plant:
Purchased energies: Fuel energies, electricity
Generated energies: Byproduct fuels, electricity
Other energies: Chemical, pressure, steam and hot air

The management of energy in the steel plant has several components which need serious attention. These components are described below.
Quality of energy Quality of raw materialsProcess stabilityInefficient and inadequate maintenance Line losses, leakages and flaringHandling of solid wastesSize of the equipment, etc
Effective management of the energy cannot be done alone either by the energy department or by the individual production shop. It has to be  team effort with the participation of every one.

Reheating furnace in steel plant

In steel plants reheating furnaces are used in hot rolling mills to heat the steel stock (Billets, blooms or slabs) to temperatures of around 1200 deg C which is suitable for plastic deformation of steel and hence for rolling in the mill. The heating process in a reheating furnace is a continuous process where the steel stock is charged at the furnace entrance, heated in the furnace and discharge at the furnace exit. Heat is transferred to the steel stock during its traverse through the furnace mainly by means of convection and radiation from the burner gases and the furnace walls.
Re-heating furnace

The charging temperature of the steel stock may range from ambient temperature to 800 deg C. The target exit temperature of the steel stock is governed by the requirement of the process of rolling which is dependent on the rolling speed, stock dimension and steel composition. Steel quality aspects put constraints on temperature gradient and surface temperature. Fuel used in these furnaces can be liquid or gaseous fuel.

The reheating furnace classification can be done in several ways. These are described below.
1. Based on the method of heating a reheating furnace can be combustion type or electric type. The combustion type furnace can be oil fired or gas fired.
2. Based on method of charging reheating furnaces can be classified as batch type or continuous type. In batch furnaces the charged material remains in a fixed position on the hearth until heated to rolling temperature while in continuous furnaces the charged material moves through the furnace and is heated to rolling temperature as it progresses through the furnace.
3. Continuous furnaces can be further classified based on the movement of steel stock inside the furnace. Based on this classification the continuous type reheating furnaces are pusher type, rotary hearth type, walking beam type, walking hearth type or roller hearth type.
4. Based on heat recovery, the reheating furnace can be either regenerative or recuperative. Presently only recuperative type of reheating furnaces are in use.
